Abstract

A note on the sound design: The Tracks draws inspiration from Marcus’ beautiful images that both reveal and conceal and explore the nexus of human and divine love.

The tracks are created in collaboration with AI tools, specifically Suno, Synthesiser V, Chat GPt and Claude. The lyrics are GPT, Claude and Google Translate versions of Richard Rolle’s The Fire of Love, rendered into liturgical Latin, Russian and Spanish, along with elements of canonical Mass lyrics. I chose to use musical styles that are found in ecclesiastical settings such as the 16th Century Catholic church, Medieval monasteries,

Russian Orthodox settings relatively unchanged by centuries, and more modern Christian music. I couldn’t resist a little Eurovision… I gave the lyrics, extensive melodic fragments, chordal and modal structures and stylistic instructions to Suno and extracted “stems” from the selected outputs. The pieces are then reconstructed, replayed and adapted, in some cases from several Suno outputs. They are treated in various ways to conceal, disrupt, highlight or enhance elements of melody, harmony or text. Processes include bit-crush and sample rate disruption reminiscent of over compressed illicit mp3s; skipping found on a damaged and shared “mix tape” CD left in your friend’s car; digital quantisation artefacts that occur when the quiet, round, analogue does not fit the digital square; resonances and harmonisers that activate with intensity or performative intent; triggered impulses; and fragments of memory buffers. – Colin Webber
