Abstract
This exegesis focuses on the design of AI in games. This text aims to explain key concepts important to game design, including the use of affective and emotive components to further immerse players in the game world. The goal is to provide insight into the level of complexity required in an AI units’ design to provide enjoyable interactions attainable by an independent developer.
This research will take the combined efforts of playtesters and myself as sole designer and programmer to create a series of play tests with which to examine the enjoyment of various levels of AI complexity and their interactions with the player. Starting as simple patrolling enemies with no awareness of their surroundings, the evolution in the design of these AI characters will grow to include complex navigation, interaction with the environment and enhancement in their senses. Data collected throughout the test will provide insight into which AI components are looked upon favourably and which are not. The end result of this study is to provide other designers guidance when planning and designing future AI interactions.
Notes
Fractured is a space scavenger game where the player is tasked with finding and scavenging derelict ships throughout a new asteroid belt made from the destruction of earth. Players will need to be cunning in their attempts to search these vessels, avoiding hazardous security forces whilst gathering useful supplies to bring back to their home station.
