Abstract

This Place Here is a practice-led creative research project that explores how live music, film, projection mapping, and culturally significant instruments can be combined to create an immersive performance centred on cultural storytelling, exchange, and connection. Originally conceived as a documentary investigation into ancestral instruments and the histories carried through them, the project evolved into a multidisciplinary live performance in which musicians, filmmakers, visual artists, and cultural practitioners collaborated to present these stories through sound, image, and shared performance.

The methodology involved collaborative creative development, cultural consultation, artist-led research, audiovisual experimentation, rehearsal, and iterative testing of live and projected elements. Particular attention was given to the ethical representation of cultural knowledge, the relationships between artists and communities, and the role of performance in creating an accessible space for audiences to encounter diverse cultural perspectives.

The resulting work brought together live music, documentary film, projection, and audience engagement within a cohesive performance environment. It created professional development opportunities for participating artists, strengthened cross-cultural creative relationships, and encouraged audiences to reflect on identity, ancestry, place, and the continuing relevance of traditional instruments and cultural practices.

The project demonstrates that interdisciplinary performance can provide a meaningful platform for cultural knowledge when it is developed through trust, collaboration, flexibility, and cultural care. It also establishes a foundation for future performances, educational workshops, partnerships, festival presentations, and touring opportunities.
