Abstract
The creative arts industries are experiencing a shift as they continue to evolve into the digital age of the 21st century and online consumption. Opportunities across many creative disciplines have expanded as the ability to network and learn online has become more accepted and commonplace. This has been prevalent in the electronic dance music industry, as the development of industry software and equipment become more affordable, but with this also comes a greater depth of talent and competition.
Whilst many revenue streams to the core of the music industry still exist, such as contracts with record labels, touring/performing live and merchandise sales, aspiring artists now have more ways to directly connect and engage with their audience. Therefore more opportunities to monetise their talents through channels such as digital streaming, subscription sales, crowdfunding and online tutorials/education have also become prevalent. Despite this growing depth of talent and opportunity, modern artists still experience the same financial struggles early in their careers as they are trying to develop their sound, brand and image. There are many ideas around effective ways to monetise a career and obtain happiness in one's chosen creative field. With the understanding and importance of collaboration becoming as valuable as ever, many creative projects require skills and assets from a range of creative mediums- from the ideation stage to the development and through to the execution, marketing and distribution aspects of a deliverable project. Mastering remote online collaboration can help an individual network and rise through their chosen field, thus establishing their career path more rapidly with the goal of having to avoid a ‘regular job’ outside of their creative industry, thus being able to make their creative passions a financially healthy and viable career, leading to a life of happiness.
In this research, I explore challenges for creatives in the modern age through studying elite professionals in the music and entertainment industry. Using these Case Studies, I have created a university-style lecture with strategies to help guide artists through their creative process, expand on collaborative methods and techniques used by established artists, and explore potential income opportunities that can support growing artists as technologies continue to develop towards the middle of the Century.
