Abstract

About Cat Food:

There are multiple social and cultural factors that drive ‘Cat Food’, but none more important than the representation of grief and more specifically, the preexisting notion of how elderly caucasian women deal with the loss of their partners. Death is a natural part of life but often, in Western society, stereotypes suggest that these women stumble down an ugly spiral of insanity and shut themselves out from society

Synopsis:

Maria and Philip are a loving Australian couple nearing retirement, all they have is each other. But when Maria wakes one morning to find Philip has suddenly passed in his sleep, she will do whatever it takes to keep him by her side. Unwilling to go on without him, she continues to live with him in the bed. Sinking deeper into delusion and obsession. But when the neighbour’s cat creeps in through the window, the looming threat of the outside world proves too high a risk. Making desperate attempts to hide and protect herself, Maria will stop at nothing to make sure they leave her and her husband alone. No matter the cost.
