Abstract
Beyond Diagnosis: Within is an audio-visual experience that has been inspired by our desire to explore innovative storytelling using a range of in-depth aural mixing techniques. Depicting a young person’s first schizophrenic episode, this project blends the boundaries between educational and immersive media, with the aim of raising awareness of schizophrenia in young people. Depictions of mental health in media have historically stigmatised and ‘othered’ people who experience mental health disorders. To directly challenge these problematic depictions, this project has been grounded in real accounts, extensive research and professional insights, rather than stereotypes and exaggerated tropes. Our blend of stylised camera shorts with the intense binaural soundscape aims to push the boundaries of conventional storytelling, and capture the complexity of a mental illness that is still stigmatised and misunderstood.
