Abstract
Objectives: Technological advances in vocal production have provided independent artists with tools to achieve high-quality recordings. However, these same artists continue to face challenges in adapting to rapidly evolving technologies, environmental constraints, and managing the psychological demands of the creative process. This study explores how technical practices, advanced editing tools, and machine learning technologies intersect with psychological and environmental factors to help independent artists achieve professional-standard vocal recordings.
Methods/Design: Using an action research methodology, this study integrates hybrid recording practices that blend DIY and professional studio environments with machine learning tools such as iZotope Neutron and RX. The project involved the production of a four-track alternative pop EP to explore the practical application of these methods. Data were collected through reflective practice, critical listening, and iterative experimentation to assess the impact of technological, environmental, and psychological factors on vocal production.
Results: Key findings indicate that advanced editing tools and machine learning technologies effectively streamline workflows, enhance vocal clarity, and mitigate common recording artefacts. Professional studios provided technical refinement, while home studios fostered flexibility and emotional spontaneity. Psychological strategies, including mood regulation and trusted collaboration, were crucial for achieving emotionally resonant and technically refined performances.
Conclusion: This research highlights the potential for independent artists to achieve high-quality vocal production by strategically combining accessible tools, hybrid recording practices, and emotional authenticity. The findings offer a practical framework for navigating the complexities of modern music production while maintaining creative and financial autonomy.
