The Last Werewolf

Rebecca Kerr, SAE University College

This reflection outlines my professional activity in the design, development, and commercial launch of the interactive narrative game, The Last Werewolf, and its direct relevance to my role at SAE.

Project Activities and Outcomes:

My work encompassed the full game design and development pipeline for The Last Werewolf. This real-world project provided current, in-depth experience across all stages of production.

A significant aspect was the commercial launch on Steam, following an Early Access period that began in February 2023. I managed the entire backend process, which included developing and implementing a DLC support pack strategy and community engagement. This experience yielded practical knowledge in platform publishing, digital storefront management, and community engagement.

The project also involved showcasing the game at multiple public events, notably the official launch at PAX Aus 2025. Participating in Australia’s largest games expo provided direct experience in industry pitching and handling media and consumer feedback. Furthermore, the development was structured as an experimental approach to independent production, which included successfully securing funding during the Early Access phase.

Connection to SAE:

The entire process, from design and development to commercial release, event showcasing, and funding application, has generated a comprehensive body of knowledge on contemporary indie game production.

By directly integrating these real-world pipelines, challenges, and solutions into my teaching, I ensure that my students receive up-to-date, actionable industry skills. This commitment to active professional practice directly informs my curriculum, significantly improving student outcomes and maintaining the professional relevance of my work at SAE.

Abstract

The Last Werewolf is a story-driven interactive narrative game that explores themes of identity, stigma, and self-acceptance through the lens of the supernatural. The game follows Lachie, a young woman who must navigate her daily life while coming to terms with her newfound werewolf identity, a condition that serves as a metaphor for managing Bipolar Disorder. The narrative-focused gameplay invites players to guide Lachie's journey across three chapters, making meaningful discoveries through interactive dialogue and story moments that shape her path. Players engage with the world by investigating supernatural mysteries, collecting clues, and managing the delicate balance of embracing who she is while searching for answers about her past.
