Abstract

This presentation outlines James Kelly’s practice-based research in music composition and DJing, foregrounding vinyl as both medium and instrument. Kelly examines how turntables and the vinyl-cutting lathe function not only as playback devices but as compositional tools. His doctoral research identified techniques such as; locked grooves, over-cut grooves, and the aesthetic use of vinyl noise, that reposition record production as sound generation.
