Abstract

This presentation explores the use of structured oral assessment as an alternative to written assessment in creative higher education, addressing challenges around authorship, integrity and authentic evaluation. Drawing on a multi-campus trial across major project units, a range of oral formats were implemented, including individual, group and presentation-based approaches.

Findings indicate that oral assessment provides more authentic evidence of student learning, improves visibility of individual contribution, and supports deeper reflective engagement. Key challenges included student preparedness, staff calibration and clarity of expectations.

The presentation outlines practical strategies for implementation and positions structured oral assessment as a viable and scalable approach to improving assessment design in creative disciplines.
