Abstract
A Weathered Nail is part of a larger area of practice-led research called "The Song That Waited". It is a songwriting project centred on the reimagining and completion of a song that has remained unfinished for more than two decades. Rather than approaching the work as a conventional process of revision, the project treats the song’s long history as part of its creative material, allowing earlier ideas, recordings, lyrics, arrangements and performances to be revisited from a contemporary perspective.
The songwriting process deliberately introduced unfamiliar methods of working, disrupting habitual creative decisions and creating opportunities for unexpected ideas to emerge. Fragments of the original work were reworked, rearranged, improvised upon and placed into new contexts, while constraints and chance were used to encourage alternative musical and lyrical directions. This approach allowed the song to develop through a dialogue between its earlier form and the creative possibilities of the present.
The resulting work is therefore not simply a completed version of an old song, but a new composition shaped by its own history. The project explores how a song can change meaning over time, and how material that might once have been considered unfinished, discarded or resolved can become a source of renewed creative possibility. This project demonstrates an approach to songwriting in which uncertainty, experimentation and the passage of time become active elements of the creative process.
