Abstract
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is a form of educational research that examines teaching and learning processes to improve them. It is informed by evidence and based on critical reflection on teaching practice. SoTL research is rigorous and systematic, using various research methods to collect data.
SoTL research can positively impact student learning outcomes, teaching practice, and curriculum development. It can also help improve a discipline's teaching and learning scholarship.
The seminar provided an overview of SoTL, including its benefits, challenges, and how to start research.
Here are some of the benefits of SoTL research:
-
Improves student learning outcomes
-
Strengthens teaching practice and scholarship
-
Informs curriculum development
-
Enhances institutional reputation
Here are some of the challenges of SoTL research:
-
Lack of understanding within universities about SoTL
-
Difficulty getting SoTL published in traditional research journals
-
Time constraints for faculty to conduct SoTL research
-
Lack of funding and resources to support SoTL
Despite the hurdles, SoTL research is a valuable and inspiring endeavour that can transform teaching and learning.
