Abstract

Frolicking in the Garden of Scull: A Practice-Led Exploration of Minimalist Sound Design in Gallery-Based Multimedia Art

Frolicking in the Garden of Scull is an animated adaptation of visual artist Anthony Breslin’s painting A Frolic in the Garden of Scull. The work was exhibited as part of Breslin’s major solo exhibition Melange at the Burrinja Cultural Centre, Upwey, Victoria, Australia, from 15 October to 19 November 2022. The exhibition merged never-before-exhibited early surrealist works with new paintings and large-scale art installations. A key component was the inclusion of multimedia works and soundscapes, including this animation, positioned in the outer gallery space to create an immersive environment (Super User, 2025).

Overcoming significant health challenges, Breslin’s return to large-scale exhibition reaffirmed his position as one of Melbourne’s most innovative visual artists. Over the course of his career, he produced more than fifty exhibitions, an art opera, and several published works, gaining both national and international recognition. This animation marked the first integration of bespoke sound design into his visual practice. The creative team comprised:

  • Artwork: Anthony Breslin

  • Animation: Jason Marx

  • Music and Audio Production: Adam Quaife
