Abstract
ScreenWise is a mobile app prototype designed to help families respond to screen use in a more supportive and reflective way. The project addresses the complex relationship between adolescent screen use and mental health, particularly how screen time is often treated as something to restrict rather than understand.
Our theoretical lens was Mad Studies, which encouraged us to move away from judgemental and pathologising approaches and instead focus on lived experience, emotional context, and open conversation. The app is designed for parents of kids 10-13 years old, while also needing to feel engaging for the children using it.
The prototype uses gamified features such as XP, streak, leaderboards, avatars and rewards to make the experience feel fun and interactive. It also includes reflective prompts that ask the children how the apps made them feel, alongside podcast resources and notifications parents receive. Rather than simply tracking screentime, ScreenWise aims to encourage better communication between parents and children about digital habits, emotions and wellbeing.
