Abstract
In documentary production courses it is difficult to engage students to think about creative new treatments of actuality in two areas: sound design and interactive formats. Both are dependent on learning and understanding complex technologies outside of familiar film practice. In addition, students are often coming to terms with the basic concepts of documentary production, as very few have initiated a film degree with the intention of focusing on the factual. This proposes a dilemma in the classroom - how to progress the pedagogy to incorporate the potential of these creative dimensions. This research asks the question how do we encourage students to explore interactive documentary with a focus on cinematic sound design?
