Abstract
This talk explores how ambient music is often regarded as merely relaxing background sound and introduces the concept of interpassivity to uncover more nuanced compositional and listening experiences. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory and aesthetics, it argues that listeners and composers can delegate enjoyment of the music, engaging passively rather than actively. By comparing modular ambient music with other genres, the talk highlights how its lack of active participation can foster unique aesthetic experiences, encouraging a broader framework for understanding and appreciating modular music.
