Abstract

In an early stage of my HDR study of contemporary DIY music & sound-making practice,  I felt a need to explore musical styles as one of the key elements of music-making praxis. However, what quickly became apparent was the very complex nature of highly hybridised contemporary music-making practice. In order to mediate this phenomenon, I decided to research from the present era down certain lineages of music-making practice. I did this one decade at a time, over the previous century. Emerging out of my extensive research were some clear differences between different lineages - different styles and approaches - of music-making practice. This then afforded me an opportunity to categorise a breadth of musical styles under 3 lineages, using umbrella terms.

This blog represents part of a series of that particular research practice process.
