Abstract

The essay “Uncertain Positions” was written to accompany Dislocations: Body, Memory Place, an exhibition I curated at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Access Gallery as part of the Midsumma Festival in early 1993, almost 30 years before the NGV’s high profile Queer exhibition. The accompanying reflection, “The Quotidian and the Other: Reflections Thirty Years on,” reflects on the changing nature of queer art and queer communities and places this exhibition in the context of developments in queer art and the exploration of queer themes in prominent national and international exhibitions such as the most recent iterations of the Venice Biennale and the Sydney Biennale. It traces and contrasts the evolution of queer art as otherness and the queer quotidian.
