With great pleasure we are honoured to launch this inaugural publication of Imaginings: Creative Practice and Inquiry that provides a platform for highlighting and sharing the exceptional and diverse talents of SAE University College’s academic staff and Master of Creative Industries (MCI) students.

When Albert Einstein once stated, the ‘true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination’, he was identifying the crucial role of imagination in merging research with creativity. As creative practitioners, we are all well aware of this praxis in our given disciplines. With each edition, this publication will continue to celebrate the blending of our academic and creative imaginations.

Congratulations to those who have been selected to contribute to this very first edition. It has been a considerable editorial and technical undertaking, and a leap of faith in many ways. Thank you to Jeffrey Kessel for the art and banner design. Thank you to Dr Corinna Di Niro and Dr Toby Wren for their efforts and support.

We would like to particularly thank our Dean, Rachael Shea, who from the onset recognised the value in showcasing SAE University College’s creative practice and inquiry by initiating the project and opening the pathways that have bought us to this exciting launch moment.

We look forward to this being the first of many publications of Imaginings. Please enjoy!

Volume 2, Issue 1

Welcome to the second issue of our journal, which continues the journey from Imaginings’ inaugural edition of August 2025.

The non-binding subtheme for this issue is the creative and critical value of embracing ambiguity, and follows recent work on uncertainty as a valuable ally in creative practice. Some of our authors engaged with this theme explicitly, but otherwise the thread runs subtle through aspects of each discussion. We have fourteen fresh articles for your consideration, from a variety of disciplines (games, animation, music, audio, design, film, creative industries), making this the most comprehensive edition of our journal so far.

We would like to thank each of our incredible contributors for their engaging explorations of their creative practice, thought-provoking theoretical critiques, and their individual reflections on teaching and scholarship.

We would also like to thank all those who continue supporting this endeavour by allowing the time and space for it to breathe and grow, and for their advice and moral support: in particular our wonderful Dean, Rachael Shea, Dr Corinna Di Niro, and Dr Toby Wren.
